Guest Author: Melinda Curtis

When I was in Reno for the RT Convention in May, I had the pleasure of meeting Melinda Curtis. Melinda is an award-winning USA Today Bestselling author who writes sweet romance for Harlequin Heartwarming and also writes red hot reads as Mel Curtis.

I've just finished reading her story, "Marrying the Wedding Crasher" which was a fabulous story, and I'm looking forward to reading "The Wedding Promise" as soon as I can.

It was lovely to meet you in Reno, Melinda. Thanks for joining me on the blog today.

My pleasure. It's lovely meeting authors face to face because I don't normally get out of my office.

You write contemporary romance "that spans the sexy scale". How difficult do you find it switching from a sweet to a red-hot story and back again?

For me, it's like ordering a grilled cheese sandwich one day and spicy tamales the next. The characters in my sexy books tend to be more alpha, which makes it easier. My sweeter books have heroes with a sensitive side.

Can you tell us about your most recent story and whether it held any particular challenges for you?

Ah, that would be "Marrying the Wedding Crasher". This book was originally pitched as a wedding being crashed in the first scene, but my editor didn't like the idea. That book was sold as a "blind", meaning my editor and I would determine what the book was about when it came time to write it. It was the fourth book in a contract. But it kept the title for tracking purposes. I wrote the book as a fake girlfriend book/man needs wedding date. Two weeks before it was due, my editor told me everyone loved the title, so I had to scramble to write a wedding crash into it.

Having read the story, that's interesting background! You did a great job with the scramble because it was a very natural scene and I loved it. What's next for you as an author?

I'm part of a contemporary cowboy series coming out in October from Harlequin. And then my newest series for them debuts in February - "The Mountain Monroes", about 12 siblings and cousins who inherit a snowy town in Idaho.

I definitely don't have a favourite child, but I do have a couple of book 'babies' that are my favourites. Do you have a couple of titles you've written that have particularly resonated with you?

I adore "Summer Kisses" because it deals with a man coming to terms with his grandfather dying (so weepy). I really enjoyed writing "You May Now Kiss the Bride", because it is a romantic comedy styled after the black and white Cary Grant movies.

Ah...those old black and white movies. Yes, there are some classics. I know my mother was always partial to Cary Grant and Gregory Peck! When you're not "chained to your desk" writing, what do you like to do?

I enjoy road trips with my husband. In the past two weeks we've been to Oregon and South Lake Tahoe.

Thanks again, Melinda. I hope to see you in New Orleans next year!

Count on it!
